Somalia Pet Import Requirements

1. Microchip & Identification

All pets must be microchipped with a 15-digit, non-encrypted microchip that complies with ISO 11784/11785 standards. If your pet's microchip does not meet these specifications, you must provide a compatible microchip scanner upon entry.
The microchip number must be clearly recorded in both the vaccination booklet/certificate and the international health certificate.

2. Rabies Vaccination

Imported canine and feline animals shall be accompanied by a certificate signed by a veterinary surgeon certifying that the animals have been vaccinated against rabies and such a certificate shall be dated not earlier than three years and not later than six months before the date of importation. 7. The importer shall satisfy the inspecting officer that the animals imported were not, during the journey, either in contact with animals which would be likely to spread disease or exposed to any other infection and that no fodder or foodstuff likely to spread disease was fed to the animals
a) with an inactivated virus vaccine or with a recombinant vaccine expressing the rabies virus glycoprotein.

4. Quarantine Requirements

Pets entering Somalia  that fully comply with all import requirements, including holding a valid import permit, are not subject to quarantine upon arrival.
However, pets arriving without a valid import permit or with incomplete documentation may be placed under mandatory quarantine at a government-approved facility for up to 14 days, at the owner's expense. This measure is enforced to safeguard public health, protect local animal populations, and prevent the introduction of infectious diseases.
An inspecting officer may with the authority of the Chief Veterinary Officer, cause any animals which have been imported and which are infected or suspected to being infected disease or which have been in contact with diseased animals or are not accompanied by a varied export veterinary certificate, to be destroyed or subjected to treatment. 9. An animal fraternity of dogs (hyena, fox, expression, wolf. Etc.) or a fraternity of cats (such as a cat, lion, leopard, cheetah, etc.) which has been imported and which has not been suitably vaccinated against rabies, shall be detained and isolated at the expense of the owner, at a place approved by the chief veterinary officer, for a period of not less than ten days and up to six months. 10. All animals which have been imported shall submit the requirements for licenses and certificates have been satisfied as soon as possible to the head of export, by sea, land or air, through the period of quarantine, the owner must pay the cost of the quarantine period.

5. Breed Restrictions

Somali has not published a list of banned breeds
No animals or animal products shall be imported without a license issued in writing by the Chief Veterinary Officer. The license shall state the animal species or nature of animal product, origin, quantity, means of transport and the port of entry. No animals or animal products may leave the port of entry until the import license and the export certificate has been produced to the inspecting officer.

(a) The animal is accompanied by the certificate of health from a veterinary surgeon and endorsed by the competent authority, signed not more than five days prior to the date of departure from the country of origin, certifying that the animal is free from clinical symptoms of any contagious or infectious disease.
(b)(i) The animal is accompanied by a valid Rabies vaccination certificate stating-
the type, manufacturer and Batch No. of the vaccine. the apparent age of the animal at the time of vaccination. the date of vaccination

(c) The animal is accompanied by a certificate from the Captain of the ship or aircraft in which the animal travelled to Somali certifying that the animal has not left the craft between the place of embarkation and the place of entry into Somali, and has been isolated from all other canine and feline animals throughout the journey.

Any animal arriving into Somali without the certificates stated above will be returned back to origin or kept in quarantine, at the expenses of the owner, for up to six months with the exception that: -

(a) animals in transit for less than 48 hours need have transit permit : Such animals will only be allowed to leave Somali by air.

The arrival of any animal entering Somali must be reported to the nearest veterinary office within three days of arrival.

Validity of Rabies Vaccines – A certificate of Rabies vaccination is valid for all canines which are over the age of 3 months at vaccination and for all felines which are over the age of 3 months at vaccination, for the period specified, providing that one of the following approved vaccines has been used:

a) Phenolized (inactivated) vaccine:

Canines and felines: One month to 12 months, post vaccination.

b) Living Avianized vaccine (Flury or Kelev strain)

Canines: Vaccine administration not older than 12 months, post vaccination.

Felines: Vaccine administration not older than 12 months, post vaccination
