Papua New Guinea Pet Import Requirements

1. Microchip & Identification

Dogs and cats must be identified by microchip.

2. Rabies Vaccination

Vaccination against rabies prohibited (unless intending re-entry to Australia).

3. Titre Tests & Bloodwork

Not required.

4. Quarantine Requirements

All pets are required to spend 48hrs in quarantine on arrival to PNG – all fees are payable directly to Kila

Kila Quarantine Station upon collection. Pets can only arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday. Your pet will be collected

from the airport and transported to the quarantine station by Authorised Quarantine Personnel or your nominated

Customs agent. Owners are not permitted to collect or take charge of the animal/s on arrival

Owners or their agents must inform post‐entry quarantine personnel at least 48 hours prior to actual arrival of the animals.

5. Breed Restrictions

  • Dogs and cats which have been born, raised and for imported animals, have been cleared of quarantine requirements or spent more than 1 year in Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu only may be imported into PNG with prior written permission from the Chief Stock Inspector in the form of an import permit.  (These are Permitted Countries or States).
  • Arrivals only on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays (unless a public holiday falls on these days).
  • Dogs and cats originating from countries known to be endemic for rabies.
  • Vaccination against rabies prohibited (unless intending re-entry to Australia).
  • Breeds – Pit Bull Berrier or American Pit Bull, Japanese Toza, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brazileiro, Dingo, Wolf, Perro De Presa Canario, Cane Corso, Alano Espanol, Dogue de Boreaux, etc.
  • Hybrids like wolves, Australian dingo, etc.
  • Pregnant animals at late pregnancy stage.
  • Dogs between 12 weeks and 6 months unless an exemption is granted.
  • All importers MUST have an authorised Customs Clearing Agent nominated to handle clearance from Customs upon arrival of animals. It is a requirement according to PNG Customs legislations that duly authorised agents act as Customs Brokers for any import, including live animals.
