Falkland Islands Pet Import Requirements

Official veterinary regulations, microchip standards, rabies rules, and breed restrictions for entering Falkland Islands.

1. Microchip & Identification

Pets must be microchipped before vaccinations.

2. Rabies Vaccination

Pets must be vaccinated not less then 30 days and not more tan 12 months prior to the date of expert. Health (OIE), Terrestrial Animal Health Code.

3. Titre Tests & Bloodwork

Titer test requirements: A blood sample must be taken from the animal and sent to a reputable Rabies Reference Laboratory to perform the RNATT*/FAVN, and the result must be sent directly to the Veterinary Services prior to issuing an import permit. The test result must show a serum antibody level of at least 0.5 IU/mL. The test must be done not less than one (1) month after vaccination with an approved Rabies Vaccine and Titer test must be available 90 days prior to travelling.

Cats must be:
• Tested negative for the following diseases within 30 days of export:
1. Feline Leukaemia virus by ELISA test at a Government approved laboratory.
2. Feline Infectious Peritonitis by detection of antibodies to feline coronavirus(FCoV) at a Government approved laboratory. In practice ‘snap’ tests are not adequate.

4. Quarantine Requirements

U-    Upon arrival airport, owner must advise to the Falklands Security Service about the pet landing.   Pets must be taken by owner to their house where pets are under strict quarantine for 48 hours. That means cats have to stay indoors and dogs may exercise (under supervision) and have toilet breaks into your dog-proof garden/yard only. In this time the dog must not be allowed to meet any other dogs.

5. Breed Restrictions

***ONLY UK, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, France & The Netherlands have official protocols for moving pets to Falklands.  All other origin country must be authorized by Falklands authorities case by case. 

  • Pregnant animals may only be transported in the 1st half of the length of their gestation and at the discretion of the exporting veterinarian.
  • Animals may not be transported if they have given birth in the last 6 weeks.
  • If hire a comfort stop service en route animals may be given a comfort break, if possible, but they must NOT leave the airport or come into contact with any other animal other than those already travelling.
  • Importing Working Sheep Dogs- Must be examined and found to be free from signs of progressive retinal atrophy prior to export. This test needs to be carried out by a registered veterinary ophthalmologist only in entire male or female dogs of breeding age and destined to work as sheep dogs.

6. Customs & Import Rules

Containers may not be released from the port without a Clearance Certificate. Clearance Certificate will be issued by the Biosecurity Officer on receipt of Health Certificate (copies if necessary) and invoices. Before importing, Contact Biosecurity for inspection appointment. Normal working hours for inspections are Monday to Friday 8:00a to 4:30p unless otherwise arranged with the Biosecurity Officer. Containers should not be open prior to inspection.
